Drone Flight Permissions
Drone flights are becoming increasingly popular as visitors and residents capture the spectacular scenery of Shetland from the air.
To ensure the safety of drone operators and other airspace users, it is important to understand the airspace restrictions that apply around SaxaVord UK Spaceport.
The Restricted Zone – EGR9U011
EGR9U011 is a permanently active Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ) and permission must be obtained from SaxaVord UK Spaceport to fly your drone within this area.
Client confidentiality is very important for SaxaVord thus it is important to state your purposes for flight clearly if needing to fly within this zone.
The EGR9U011 is centred on 60o 49’ 06” N, 000o 46’ 12” W and extends 2.7 Nautical Miles (NM) or 5 km. It extends vertically from SFC to 2000 ft Above Ground Level (AGL).

State-of-the-art facilities
Currently, the site has one operational launch complex, consisting of a launch stool, pad and Integration hangar, where rockets and satellites are integrated. The stool and pad are occupied exclusively by Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA).
A bespoke rocket tracking, telemetry and flight termination system has also been installed on the site.
Two more complexes are under construction, as well as a Mission Management Control Centre to monitor launches.
SaxaVord also provides bespoke facilities for component testing, development and storage.
There is also office space, high-quality accommodation and catering for those close to the launch site.
Once built, the spaceport will support up to 30 launches a year.
