Ground Stations
SaxaVord operates ground stations in Unst – a blend of our own and third-party facilities – and is actively expanding its network both locally and internationally.
Ground stations
As with launch, location is the key to value. Shetland’s remoteness means the radio frequency (RF) environment is clean, and there is very little obstruction thanks to the absence of high-growing vegetation and high-rise buildings.
At our latitude of 60° North, satellites in polar and highly-inclined orbits can expect a high contact capacity.
We deliver Ground Station as a Service (GSaaS) on an OPEX model across UHF, S-band and X-band – with Ka-band coming soon – so customers pay only for contacts, not costly CAPEX. We provide rack-space, power and operations for dedicated antenna assets, supporting both commercial and public missions, with ample room for future expansion.
We have developed infrastructure to support high data backhaul and power needs. Gigabit bandwith, with resilient and redundant backhaul, ensures reliable global connectivity. Our customers set their Service Level Agreement (SLA) requirements, and we deliver tailored plans to meet them.
Our skilled technicians provide tailored maintenance services, with staff permanently based in Unst. Additionally, our experienced security team ensures everything runs smoothly, leaving nothing unchecked.
State-of-the-art facilities
Currently, the site has one operational launch complex, consisting of a launch stool, pad and Integration hangar, where rockets and satellites are integrated. The stool and pad are occupied exclusively by Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA).
A bespoke rocket tracking, telemetry and flight termination system has also been installed on the site.
Two more complexes are under construction, as well as a Mission Management Control Centre to monitor launches.
SaxaVord also provides bespoke facilities for component testing, development and storage.
There is also office space, high-quality accommodation and catering for those close to the launch site.
Once built, the spaceport will support up to 30 launches a year.
Baltasound Teleport
At Baltasound Teleport, the UK’s most northerly ground station, we have two fully operational antennas (since 2021 and 2024) which manage more than 1,300 contacts per month. A third antenna is in final preparations for deployment.
Also at Baltasound, we host a third-party gateway with six active assets that were installed in 2023.
Antenna assets are in production for strategically placed sites worldwide, designed for optimum support of satellites launched from Shetland and elsewhere.
